What Kay's Former Students Say about Personal Essays Online

"I've taken several writing workshops, participated in a few writing groups, and read dozens of books on creative nonfiction; but it was Kay Marie Porterfield's Personal Essay class -- with her lessons and feedback -- that finally turned me into a confident, productive writer. After completing and marketing several essays under Kay's guidance, I am now making daily progress on a previously stalled childhood memoir. I've recommended her workshop to aspiring and blocked writers, certain that it can make a difference in their writing life, too. "

"Kay Porterfield's on-line course helped me to begin writing authentically about myself and my personal experience. Her gentle challenges to stay true to my own story and let it stand unapologetically were invaluable to me. The lessons were clear and well-written and always pointing me in the direction of clarity and depth of understanding. I've already recommended this same course to several of my friends, my students and my directees."

I'm tempted to retake Kay Porterfield's class again and again. Last year I enrolled with the hope of improving my skills at writing personal essays. In my work at a weekly newspaper, one of my assignments is to write a personal column each week. While taking Kay's class I wrote an essay that wound up taking first place in our newspaper category's competition at Kansas Press Association. What a thrill it was to excel, for the first time, in this area of journalism. I keep Kay's class 'lectures' printed where I can see them often, but there's something about knowing her 'personally' and keeping in touch with her that inspires. I may yet take her class again, and I always look forward to reading each of her monthly newsletters. She's a natural-born teacher, as well as a writer.
